Pro Tools 8 Drops at AES

October 3, 2008

This seems to be to be the big news at the opening of AES in San Francisco (besides the ongoing reign of Rice-a-Roni). It looks like Pro Tools is playing catch up with Logic- the biggest news would probably be the inclusion of new virtual instruments including the “Mini Grand Piano”, “Boom” drum machine, “DB-3” tonewheel organ emulator, “Vacuum” synthesizer (who came up with that name?!?), the “Xpand 2” sampler player synth workstation, and “Structure” sampler player. This is great news for PT users.

Also big news is the addition of notation… this will be huge for many users. They’ve expanded the track count for LE/M-Powered users, extended their “elastic” time/pitch capabilities with Elastic Pitch, updated the interface and added some effects plug-ins. Maybe not an industry-shaking update, change-DAW’s kind of thing, but certainly adding lots of neat new tricks for existing users.

Lucky for me (?), my poison of choice leans to that of analog synthesizers, a hobby which is relatively easy on the wallet. Because I’ve been bitten by the DIY synthesizer bug, which has led to my current obsession to build my own analog sequencer.
